Gruffudd ap Cynan
Gruffudd was the King of Gwynedd from 1081 until his death in 1137, and he became a key figure in Welsh resistance to Norman rule.
The Ho
uses of Gwynedd, Powys and Deheubarth can all be traced back to Rhodri Mawr who was a King of Gwynedd in the 9th Century.
Hywel Dda established the House of Deheubarth and also wrote the ‘Laws of Hywel Dda’ which were used in Wales for centuries.
Rhys ap Gruffudd is remembered as ‘The Lord Rhys’. He was one of the most successful of the Welsh and became the dominant power in the Wales of his time.
Bleddyn ap Cynfyn
Bleddyn became King of Powys in 1069 and his descendants continued to rule Powys as the House of Mathrafal.
On Septe
mber 16th 1400, Owain was declared Prince of Wales. He was thought to be the person best qualified to take up the title due to his ancestry and achievements.
He inherited the lordship of Powys Fadog from his father, Gruffudd Fychan, and owned properties in Sycharth and Glyndyfrdwy.
His mother, Elen, was born into the House of Deheubarth - and Owain was a descendant of the House of Gwynedd through both of his parents.
