Sir John Edward Lloyd (1861 - 1947) was born in Liverpool, and educated in the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Lincoln College, Oxford. He wrote the first serious history of the country's formative years, ‘A History of Wales from the Earliest Times to the Edwardian Conquest’ (1911) and also ‘Owen Glendower/Owain Glyn Dŵr’ (1931). He co-edited with Robert Thomas Jenkins the first edition of the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, although it was not published until 1959.


He is buried on Ynys Tysilio (Church Island) in Menai Bridge, and the coordinates of his grave are:
